The Club began with a meeting of 43 local people in June 1980, some who were bowlers at nearby clubs and others whose interest had been sparked by ABC TV coverage of World Bowls at Frankston in the same year.
Spurred on by an early agreement with the Lillydale Shire Council that the current site of the Club could be leased, our pioneers moved quickly to recruit members, raise funds and plan construction of the necessary facilities with 221 Foundation members signed up by March 1981.
The first two greens and clubhouse were completed by late 1983 & it was estimated that 1200 people visited the Club on Opening Day November 26, 1983.
The Club has had notable success in pennant competition with both our Ladies and Men reaching Division 1.
Mooroolbark Bowls Club has gone from strength to strength, and in 1986 added a third green, became incorporated, added a storage area at the rear of the kitchen, along with a Greenkeeper’s shed across the greens and updated the kitchen with stainless steel equipment, etc.
In 1994 the Club installed five poker machines which remained for five years until withdrawn, the profits therefrom being used to completely rebuild one of our original greens.
In 1999, the other original green (No. 3) was converted to a synthetic surface and is used all year round.
In October 2005 the Club completed purchase of the original block of land comprising the three greens and buildings, together with the vacant land adjoining, the latter which has been converted to a car park as required by the Shire of Yarra Ranges under the Contract of Sale.
Apart from greenkeeper & cleaner contracts, volunteer members operate the Club and our Social Committee is continually arranging entertainers for our various functions throughout the year.
The club's 25th anniversary was celebrated on Saturday 27th August 2005 and we take great pride in our short history and confidently assure all visitors and new members an enjoyable stay.
